Gesneria tuberosa

Curtis, 1838

An interesting plant, in that both flowers and leaves sprout directly from the tuber, this species is now known as Sinningia tuberosa.  Flowers may (but not always) occur before leaves -- the leaves in the print don't appear to be attached to the tuber, and are likely shown only to illustrate their character, not to suggest their presence at the same time as flowers.
