Gloxinia speciosa

Loddiges, 1817

This print appears to be the first publication of this species, which as the hybrid "Florist Gloxinia" was destined to become one of the best known and most widely grown gesneriads.  It is properly known as Sinningia speciosa.  This publication was followed closely by publication of a similar plant in Curtis' Botanical Magazine.  Several other forms of the species can be accessed via the Antique Prints page, and photos of plants can be seen here, here and here.
