Sinningia speciosa (wild collection)
by John Boggan
Grown at L. H. Bailey Hortorium
S. speciosa is a variable species, most often seen in a lavender slipper-shaped flower, such as this. It is the ancestor of all of the "Florist Gloxinias" (see here and here, for instance). Another variant illustrates the general pattern for the species. S. sp. 'Regina' is distinctly different although clearly within the general parameters of the species. An antique print of the species can be seen here.
