Sinningia reitzii

Grown at Allan Gardens, Toronto

I was walking through Allan Gardens one day, and came across this plant, which had grown to enormous size -- it was about one meter tall, at least as wide (see the photo of the whole plant). I'd not seen reitzii at such a size, and did not recognize it.

When a juvenile plant, reitzii has dark patterned leaves, quite unlike those on the mature plant (which have a reddish reverse). And, of course, grown under lights it is seldom allowed to achieve its full size.
