xPhinastema 'California Dreaming'
This fine plant, a hybrid by Dale Martens of Phinaea albolineata and Diastema comiferum, is well worth growing by anyone who fancies the rhizomatous gesneriads. A closeup of the flowers shows the fine lines in the throat. D. comiferum, the pollen parent, is a very different shade of red -- it is unusual that a seedling would be colored this differently from either parent in a cross between two species. Phinea albolineata is a compact white species, and the origin of the clear white exterior of the corolla in 'California Dreaming'.
